2006 Season Highlights

First Tournament Win! - Seven members of the Chicago Gems - Amy, Kate, Joelle, Brenda, Flor, Anna and Jill combined with four players from around the country Shawn (Detroit), Susan (DC), Karina (DC) and Kimberly (Atlanta) to compete in the 2006 Roy Hobbs Womwn's World Series, Held in Ft. Myers, FL. The team played six games in 48 hours, including a triple-header on Friday. After going winless in pool play, the Gems scratched out an 11-10 victory in the playoffs, coming back with four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Newcomer Jill was named team MVP for her outstaning play, which included a batting average of .417, two doubles and a 7-4 double play that sealed our victory. Brenda led the team with a .438 average and also had four steals. Kate and Karina hit two doubles and Amy hit .385 with four steals and the game-winning RBI. Shawn pitched a complete game in the Gems' victory. Recap | Photos

Women's Baseball Clinic - The Gems hosted their first "Get into the Game" baseball clinic on Saturday, September 9. Attendees participated in throwing, hitting and fielding clinics. Thanks to all the women who helped make our first clinic a success. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming practice. Photos

Gems vs Diesel, July 30 - The Gems managed to play four innings before the skies opened and rained out the rest of the doubleheader. The Gems were leading 6-5 when the game was suspended. Mother Nature seemed to be against us, as our August date was also rained out. Even worse, a date we thought about playing in October, would have been snowed out if it had been scheduled.Photos

Gems vs Gems -A heat wave with temps soaring into the high 90's and a heat index breaking the 100 degree barrier couldn't keep the Gems from playing an intra-squad game on July 16. Kerry drove in three and pitched a scoreless inning. Meredith socked a two-run double, plus drove in another run with a single. Jenn and Peggy Sue also doubled and Annie reached based four times with three singles and a walk. Anna, Alicia, Jenn and Flor all wore the catcher's gear and did an outstanding job of keeping the ball from hitting the umpire. A big thanks to Tony, Phil, Tommy, Jason and John, who filled-in on defense and coached. Another big thanks to Guerin Prep High School for use of their field. Photos. The Gems also held intrasquad scrimmages on June 25 (Photos), July 22 (Photos), August 12 (Photos).

note Sox Family Field Day - The Gems participated in the Chicago White Sox Family Field Day again this year. Twelve members of the Gems family played catch in the outfield, threw in the bullpen and sat in the dugout for an hour Saturday morning, before heading off to a two-hour practice in the 90+ heat. We must love baseball! Pictures

GEMS WIN!!! - The Gems won their first game in the history of the franchise, holding on to beat the Detroit Diesel 12-11 in the second game of the Great Lakes Women's Baseball League 2006 Season Opener on Saturday, May 20. Detroit won the first game 13-7. Eight players - Annie, Alicia, Andrea, Christine, Jamie C.,Kerry, Michelle and Val - made their Gems' debut, as did head coach Tony. The rookies were joined by returning veterans Amy, Brenda, Flor, Hilary, Jenn, Kate, Rachel and assistant coach Phil. Photos

Baltimore Results - The Gems dropped all four games at the BWI Tournament In Glen Burnie, MD over Memorial Day weekend, but there were numerous highlights on the field. The Gems played very well on Saturday, giving tournament finalists the East Coast Yankees and WBL Misfits two hard-fought games. Starting pitcher Jenn struck out six Yankees in five innings of work, before turning the game over to Joelle, who made her Gems pitching debut. Tournament rookies Hilary and Michelle led the offense, with Hilary going 2-for-3 and Michelle smacking a double that rolled almost all the way to the fence for the sock-a-rooni of the game. In the afternoon game against the WBL Misfits, Brenda went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base and starting pitcher Kate struck out five in five innings. The Gems dropped two games to the Florida Crush on Sunday. Joelle and Flor went 2-for-3 in the first game, while Michelle again won sock-a-rooni honors with a hard single down the left field line. Anna caught game one, then made her pitching debut in relief in game two. Lauren took the sock-a-rooni honor in game two with a liner to left-center for a double. Both Brenda and Amy had at least one hit in all four games. A big thanks to Tony and Phil for coaching, John for keeping the book, Ernie for taking pictures and Rachel, who couldn't play because she tore her ACL the week before, but shouted encouragement from the bench. A big thank you also goes to the Eastern Women's Baseball Conference for hosting such a well-run tournament. We look forward to coming back next year and kicking some butt! Pictures

Gems in Vegas -Six members of the Gems -Jenn, Kate, Brenda, Flor, Joelle and Amy- joined six players from Orlando to play in the Roy Hobbs First Pitch Tournament in Las Vegas, February 18-20. The team went 0-3, but there were many highlights in the losing effort: Brenda stole 8 bases. Amy threw out her first baserunner at second base. Flor made her catching debut and looked great. Joelle flashed the leather at first. Jenn and Kate both introduced curveballs that had the other teams green with envy and swinging without success. The Gems would like to thank our teammates from Orlando -Vanessa, Ramona, Jennifer, Sherry, Karen and Sarah - for joining with us so we could play in the tournament. A extra big thanks to Pam and Tony, who coached us. Photos and Pix from J's Photos
