2009 Season Highlights

Turtle Rocks Champs -Congratulations to the Turtle Rocks, who went 10-1 in regular season play and defeated the Riveters in the Championship game to win the 2009 CWBL Title. Dawn threw a complete game in the win and helped her own cause with a smoking line drive three-run homer. Jaclyn blasted a deep drive to center for her second homer of the season as well. Catcher Alicia B did a nice job containing the Riveters running game, throwing out a few runners. The Riveters never gave up and battled to the end, but it wasn't enough. Congratuations to both teams for a good game to end the 2009 season. pix

New Newsletter - The latest CWBL newsletter is available for your reading pleasure.

More Homers, Skyline, Turtle Rocks Win - Our first games of September featured homeruns by Annie of the Comets and Jaclyn of the Turtle Rocks. In the morning game, The Skyline notched their first victory of the season, beating the Comets 13-12 in an exciting back and forth affair. Thirteen was the winning number of the day, as the Turtle Rocks also scored 13 runs in their victory over the Riveters, clinching the number one seed for the playoffs in the process.

Exciting Action Ends August - On Sunday, the Comets and Skyline played one of the most exciting games of the season, trading leads throughout the first six innings. The Comets took a three run lead into the top of the seventh, but the Skyline didn't go quietly, knocking in five runs to take a two run lead. The Comets battled back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two to tie and send the game into extra innings. Both teams stepped up the defense in the 8th, so we headed into the 9th. The Skyline threatened, but the Comets' fielders saved the day again. The Comet's leadoff hitter Amy got on base, then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Missy flew out to left for the second out of the inning, but she had hit the ball far enough for the Amy to tag and score. Comets win 14-13. In the early game, the Riveters jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first and never gave it back, besting the Turtle Rocks 13-6. On Saturday, the Comets and Turtle Rocks were both victorious. pix

Turtle Rocks, Riveters Week 7 Winners - The Turtle Rocks and Skyline have some of the biggest bats in the league and it was the Turtle Rocks won the battle of the bats, assisted by a fine combined pitching performance by Hannah and Val. In the afternoon matchup, the Comets played tight defense and pitched well, but were held down by the Riveters' impressive pitching combination of Jen L and Amanda, who twirled a beauty of a game.

Turtle Rocks, Riveters Week 6 Winners - The trip to Kenosha to play in the same stadium as the AAGPBL's Comets was fun for all, but especialy for the Turtle Rocks and Riveters, who made the drive home savoring the sweet taste of victory. No homeruns this week, but plenty of extra base hits by all teams. Megan T of the Turtle Rocks ended their game with two nifty defensive plays. Wish we had some video to show you. Both the Skyline and Riveters displayed good hitting and pitching in the afternoon matchup, but the Riveters had a bit more and got their fourth win of the season.

More Homers in Week 5 - Both Val and Alicia B homered in the Turtle Rocks 6-5 victory over the Comets, in what was the best played game all season. Good pitching, timely hitting and nifty defense - this game had it all. In the other game, Tanya put on a hitting display for the Skyline, going 5-5 in the leadoff spot, but the Riveters won the game behind the combined pitching effort of Jen L, Caroline and Amanda.

Turtle Rocks, Comets Week 4 Winners - It was an historical day in the CWBL - the first homeruns were hit. The Skyline's Mindy hit a grandslam homer in the first game and the Turtle Rocks' Val, subbing on the Riveters in the second, blasted a ball to deep center for her first roundtripper. A bit of a bummer for the opposing pitchers, sure, but very exciting.

Riveters, Turtle Rocks Win Again in Week 3 - The Riveters topped the Skyline in the opener to run their record to 2-1. In the afternoon contest, the Turtle Rocks and Comets both scored early, but the Turtle Rocks scored more often, winning 12-6.

Riveters, Turtle Rocks Second Week Winners - In the early game, the Riveters topped the Comets 10-4. The weather was hot, but the Turtle Rocks bats were hotter, driving in 20 runs to top the Skyline 20-6.

Turtle Rocks, Comets Win on Opening Day - The CWBL opened its season on Sunday, June 14 under sunny skies, a rarity these days here in Chicago. In the first game, the Riveters and Turtle Rocks played a tight game with good pitching and defense, including a couple of timely double plays, before the Turtle Rocks broke it open late to win 6-1. In the second game, the Comets took an early lead on the Skyline, then held on to win 10-5 as the Skyline started chipping away at the lead late, scoring four runs in the last three innings. In addition to the games, players and fans enjoyed a tasty BBQ. Thanks, Ernie, for working the grill all day. pix

Bowling Night Fun - After a long winter (that kept on going, unfortunately) the players of the CWBL got together for a night of bowling and socializing. pix

Hong Kong Tournament - Jen L, Jill B, Amy S and Jenn Z, played in the Phoenix Cup Tournament in Hong Kong, February 14-17. Jen, Jill and Amy suited up for the North American Liberty Belles while Jenn played for the Aussie Hearts. Way to represent Chicago on the world stage! pix
